the why

The project is 3 tiered:

animal well-being

Meeting individual needs of animals to ensure best possible outcome.

Streamlining processes, leading to faster adoptions, shorter length of stay, and more lives saved.

Promoting healthier, less stressful areas for animals in our care.

staff well-being

Each year, hundreds of animals are saved through transport to Harbor Humane from overcrowded shelters across the country. These life-saving journeys come with added costs, from medical care upon arrival to the logistics of safe travel. Your donation helps make these transports possible. Support our ongoing efforts or sponsor a transport to help give more animals a second chance.

community experience

Enhanced work spaces to create a positive and more productive environment for staff.

An efficient work environment that promotes self-care and commitment, amidst the difficulties of daily work.

impact

this project will create safer, more welcoming environments that enable Harbor Humane to:

  • Help animals find homes faster and build better connections between adopters and animals.
  • Reduce strain on animals, adopters, and staff.
  • Strengthen Harbor Humane’s long-term capacity as a community resource.

In doing so, we advance public health, reduce risks associated with stray and homeless animals, and foster a stronger, healthier community.

did you know?

Research has demonstrated that the duration of an animal’s stay at a shelter directly affects its likelihood of adoption.

Stress Affects Adoption Success:

Studies show that the longer an animal stays in a shelter, the lower its chance of adoption. Animals exposed to high stress in crowded or poorly designed spaces are more likely to develop behavioral and health issues, which also decreases their adoptability. Shelters that reduce stress through thoughtful design, noise control, and access to natural light see faster adoptions and healthier animals. Harbor Humane’s vision for this project is to exceed these facility standards in animal care.
