Transfer Partnerships

How We Rescue Together

Through strategic transfer partnerships, Harbor Humane rescues adoptable pets from overcrowded shelters in order to provide them with a second chance. Once here, they’re cared for and featured for adoption with hopes of finding them forever homes.

Beyond Borders:
Why Animal Transfers Matter

A Lifesaving Bridge From Shelter to Shelter

At its core, animal transfer is a powerful act of compassion and collaboration. While some shelters across the country face overwhelming intake numbers and limited resources, others—like Harbor Humane—are fortunate to have strong community support, robust adoption demand, and the infrastructure necessary to do more.

Here’s why transfer partnerships are so important:

Transfer partnerships save lives.

In overcrowded shelters, healthy and adoptable animals are often at risk of euthanaisa simply due to space or time constraints. By transferring animals to Harbor Humane, we’re giving them a second chance in a community where adoptive homes are more readily available.

They support shelter-to-shelter solidarity.

Transfer partnerships strengthen the broader animal welfare community by fostering collaboration rather than competition. We believe in a national network of support where resources are shared and the goal is collective lifesaving.

They support our community, too.

Transfers increase the variety and availability of adoptable animals here in West Michigan. This helps meet the needs of local families, supports responsible pet acquisition, and reduces reliance on backyard breeders or out-of-state puppy mills.

They align with Harbor Humane’s Mission.

Our mission is to serve both animals and the people who love them. By stepping up as a transfer destination, we’re actively reducing suffering, promoting responsible pet ownership, and creating positive outcomes for pets and people alike. If we have the space, the resources, and the adopters, then we have the responsibility. Transfers allow us to be part of a larger solution.

Our Executive Director Jen Self-Aulgur wrote a fantastic article on why transfer partnerships are vital to saving animals’ lives and supporting communities across the country.

Our Transfer Process

Donate and Support Animal Transfers

Help us prevent dogs and cats from dying needlessly simply because there is no more room at their shelter. Together, we can fight to save more lives, no matter what an animal’s originating zip code is. Donate to support our ongoing transport missions, or sponsor a life-saving trip!
